Manufacturing Engineering Manager

Job Brief:

The applicant will lead a team of engineers who deliver and support processes to manufacture advanced turbine components.  Principal machining technologies are; 5 axis grinding, high speed EDM drilling and Laser drilling / milling. The applicant will utilise excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills to deliver improvements with a zero defects mind-set.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of engineers to develop turnkey manufacturing solutions including capital expenditure, tooling & fixturing, applications development, special processing and inspection methodologies
  • Ensure appropriate technical capability and capacity is held within the team and flexed to support future production requirements
  • Lead a zero defects culture that focuses on proactive improvement methodologies and risk reduction e.g. PFMEA, Capability studies, MSA, Build In Quality, PPAP
  • Reduce costs through the use of lean methodologies and continuous improvement tools
  • Ensure the timely generation and implementation of manufacturing process documentation and procedures
  • Deliver manufacturing solutions in line with operational requirements for new product introduction programmes (NPI)
  • Interface directly with customers on new projects and improvements for existing programmes
  • Coordinate and lead engineering support for operational issues
  • Develop and share best practice across both WAM UK and US facilities
  • Implement industry leading techniques and practices to continually improve production processes


  • Degree educated in an engineering discipline
  • Formal Lean / Six Sigma accreditation preferable

Skills & Requirements:

  • 5+ years previous leadership experience in an engineering management field – preferably aerospace or automotive
  • Practical experience and understanding of aero and industrial gas turbine parts manufacture
  • Experience in launching new component manufacturing programs (NPI)
  • Experience in taking development programs through to production readiness (PPAP)
  • An understanding of both conventional and non-conventional machining processes
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings used to produce complex turbine components
  • Ability to understand and articulate 3D geometry
  • Worked in a AS9100/NADCAP quality environment and business process ownership
  • Demonstrated understanding of problem solving techniques
  • Implementation of cost control programs
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively at all levels

Desired Attributes:

  • Knowledge of laser and EDM processes preferable
  • Strong planning and organisation skills, ability to multi-task and deal with a varied workload
  • Developed coaching & mentoring capability to lead high performing teams
  • Knowledge of CAD/CAM packages
  • Team player with the ability to work well under pressure and give clear priority despite sometimes conflicting requirements
